Artist Statement
Kaitlyn Etchison’s process leads to heavy textures, laid down on canvas, scraped back, and repeated. Though now it mostly consists of line and wash balanced against negative space. A collage may be born in between. Often there is deep thought folded into paint and other times Kaitlyn shares that “I don’t think of much at all. It depends. Perhaps the way shadows swelled over sand as clouds morphed influenced how I pour a color. Maybe the carved lines of cathedral doors in Florence inform a charcoal maker. Or rather I am simply recalling the way one morning last year on vacation, how my tired eyes beheld over the bay a blue I didn’t know existed.”
